When surnames were finally given to the Indios,
many of them received names such as Juan de Dios or Maria de los Angeles--saints names were used as surnames. Sometimes they also took on the surname of the patron of the particular rancho, pueblito, hacienda, casa, etc., that they were living at. Marge Vallazza:)

I would like to invite viewers of the Ranchos forum with the Cervantes surname from Mexico to join the Cervantes DNA Surname Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=L97208&special=True The Cervantes surname in Mexico has its roots as far back as the early 16th Century. You have two important individuals with this surname. The first one is Leonel de Cervantes, he came with Hernan Cortes in the conquest of Mexico in 1521. Leonel de Cervantes was born in Burguillos del Cerro, Spain and was a member of a noble family. He was also a Commander of the Santiago Order of Knights. Leonel de Cervantes escorted Moctezuma out to address his people who were in revolt against the Conquistadors. Moctezuma was then stoned by his subjects. He died later of these wounds. Just after the conquest Cortes allowed Leonel to return home to Spain upon which Cervantes promised he would return to Mexico with his five daughters and marry them to Conquistadors. born in Hujecar in 1843. She married Casmiro Muro in
1863 (Santa Maria). Francisca had 15 children that we
know of and we know that 4 came to the US. I know
very little about the Carrillo's going forward,
however I have traced 3 generations back; Francisca's
father was Pedro Nolasco Carrillo born 1812 in
Colotlan; m. to Tranquilana Sanchez; Pedro's father
was Felipe Carrillo m. to Mariana de Casas; Felipe
Carrillo's father was Andres Carrillo m. to Maria
Estefana Martinez. So this puts me in the late 1770's
with the Carrillo's.
My Francisca did make it to the states, my grandfather
Casmiro died in 1911; I find Francisca in the 1930
census in CA living in LA county with her son Juan.

I read with great interest the 5 de Mayo article regarding Maximilian and the French forces - all of which is true of course. However, it is my understanding that 5 de Mayo was first celebrated by the Americans, because of another French-related war that was waged against Mexico, after the French had been "kicked out".
This war is called (if I remember correctly) "La Guerra de los Panaderos". A succint recollection of this incident is as follows:
Apparently, Mexican nationals had vandalized bakeries still owned by the French in Mexico City, and a big riot broke out. The French demanded reparations for the French citizens, Mexico declined. It was at this time, that the French sent in troops to once again take over Mexico, but the Mexicans defeated them on May 5th. Mexicans themselves did not see it as a victory because they landed paying restitutions anyway and lost lives during the short lived war/battle.

Well, I am not Alicia, but I thought I would answer your question. If you go to http://www.expedia.com/. Select the Maps tab from the top area. Then select the 'Find a Map' link. Then Select the 'Search for a place [North America]'. Type in Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico for the place name and then click on the 'Find a Map' button. A map of Jerez [Jerez de García Salinas], Zacatecas, Mexico should come up. Using the menus you can make it bigger and zoom in or out. I have only driven through Jerez on my way to Colotlan, Jalisco so I don't know that much about it. There is two website you can check out, that have pictures and information. Just one more tidbit on the Nopales recipes. Yes the nopal salad with queso fresco sounds really good, although in our family we never make it that way. We'll have to try them that way. By the way try to use the youngest and most tender PENCAS. A "penca" is what you call an individual stem/leaf/pad. See illustration. That's the top one. The old pencas are too tough, stringy, and inedible. A nopal refers to the entire living organism.

Hola. I responded to Alicia Carrillo's nopalitos
story because I was seeking info with regards the Carrillo name. I believe my grandfather's name was JOSE CARRILLO but I know very little else about him. Based on a brief autobiography from my mother, JOSE CARRILLO married MARIA GARCIA in Chihuahua. They had one child, a daughter, Guadalupe, born 12/12/03. I have NOT BEEN TO CONFIRM/VALIDATE their marriage or the birth of the child via the Chihuahua City records. I've made two trips to Ciudad Chihuahua (1997-98). Subsequent trips were made to Zacatecas City. My research group (La Familia, Anaheim, CA.) also visited nearby Jerez, Guadalupe and Fresnio. It turns out that my families FERNANDEZ (Grandmother) and FELIX (grandfather) are from JEREZ, ZAC. and a place called Hermita De Guadalupe..which I have yet to locate. I can tell you more about Jerez if you are interested. It is my hope that our research group will visit there again. What I'd like to share with you is that |

family is from Zacatecas. I don't know where and there is now no one to ask. I saw a place called "Jerez" on a Document. I wonder if "Jerez, Zacatecas" is a City, town, parish, rancho, area or rest stop. I have never been there and don't have a map. Do you know, Alicia ? Funny how a thing does not

One is a type of salsa, with chopped fresh red tomatoes, white onions, green chiles and cilantro (aka Bandera salsa, because of the colors of the Mexican flag-green, white, and red). I like nopalitos, I also live in San Jose and we just may share some distant relatives. According to a brief autobiography of my mother (Guadalupe Flores), her biological father's name was JOSE CARRILLO. Lupe was orphaned at a very early age in Ciudad Chihuahua. She believed her mother's name was Maria Garcia (Hidalgo de Paral) but my research indicates her name was Maria Macias. Maria died Ciudad Chihuahua at the age of 17 (1905) leaving her small daughter in the care of an old couple Tomas/Petra Dominquez who later left the child in the care of Alejandra Castillo. MARIA GARCIA/MACIAS supposedly married JOSE CARRILLO (Zacatecas) in Ciudad Chihuahua. I have not been able to find/verify Guadalupes birth (Dec. 12, 1903) in Ciudad Chihuahua nor the marriage of Maria to Jose Carrillo. Guadalupe woujld eventually end up in McFarland,
