Menudo and nopales?

Hello to everyone. What's going on with all this talk about menudo
and nopales? I thought this was a genealogy group, not a cooking
book................................I'm just kidding.

By the way, in Jalisco we also cook white menudo, not only the red
one. The last messages brought my attention because menudo as well as
pozole is closely related to my family history.

You see, my mom Margarita Tapia lives in Jalisco, Zacoalco de Torres,
and she owns a restaurant where one of her specialties is menudo.
Fonda Dona Mago, if you ever go to Zacoalco.

A generation back, her mom, my grandma Manuela Martinez, was also
known because of the delicious menudo she made. Even today, some old
folks refer to my mom's menudo as "el menudo de Manuela", even though
she has been retired for more than a decade.

And this doesn't stop with my grandma, because her mother, my great-
grandmother Ambrosia Frias Aguilar, was also famous for her
restaurant and especially for her pozole. A couple

Okay. Here is something I have heard my parents discuss:
Do you add patas de puerco (pig's feet) or Patas de res (beef feet) to
your menudo. They both agree that you don't mix meats.
In their opinion, Que asco revolver carne de puerco con res!

Well, last Friday, I had menudo with pig's feet at my inlaws for
breakfast, and I have to agree with my folks. The menudo was good,
but the broth was kinda dark and fatty.
My folks are from Jalisco, and my mother-in-law's family was from
Jalisco too, so it mustn't be a regional thing?
Must be a family thing?
So the question of the day.... do you add pig or beef feet?
I've made menudo, and I add neither if it's my choice.
Don't like anyone's feet in my soup!

My husband is from Michoacan and his mom cooks a soup that she calls
morisqueta (spelling?).  At first, I thought she didn't know how to cook
the rice which looked like a sticky blob that is mixed in with a chile and
espinazo (to give it flavor).  When I went to West Africa, I came across
a very similar dish (but it had chicken).  Further research indicated
that morizqueta is also an old Spanish term for gooey rice.  Since West
Africa had strong influence from the Arabs, and Arabs influenced the Spanish

the less strict part of it has nothing to do with geographical

I should have been a food anthropologist (sigh)

New poll for ranchos

Here goes my vote.

I'm in agreement with Maria. I don't think that Joseph expects materpieces
from all of us, but he as probably all active contributing members would
appreciate something.

At least our family trees should be protected in a separate file
inaccessable to non-contributing Members. As Joseph says, start with your
grandparents, and work back as far as you can. I have found information
very easily just knowing this. My father was born in the early 1930s, and
I found his birth record, so it really is fairly easy. The Microfilms have
so much info.

Also, it isn't fair to those who have contributed their family trees. Here
are our lives like open books for individuals who haven't done the same.

Did you get an email with the subject "Ranchos2
Maintenance (2)"? some did some didn't. We have 59 members in the Ranchos
group But 72 members of the original Ranchos group.  that means that 13
of you all are not benefitting from membership to the Ranchos2 group and all
the information in the "Files" area of that group.

So if you didn't
get that "Ranchos2 Maintenance (2)" email you need to contact me so I can send
you an invitation to join the Ranchos 2 group.

New poll for ranchos

I think it should be stricter. The intent of this board is clear.
It is meant for serious genealogists who are actively doing their
own research. The messages are open to the public so that those who
want to wait until they are ready to join can still read the
messages posted without feeling pressured to become members.

Perdon. I'm one of the foot draggers you've just describe. My apologies and request that you keep me connected until I can manage things a little better. I read all that comes across, always looking for a connection, so this exercise is not anyones waste of time.
