SLC Trip overwhelm !!

Alicia, you could do it one roll at a time at your
local FHC.
I encourage you to go to SLC for your own pleasure
and curiousity but after this just order the films from your local FHC--one at a
time for your viewing leisure.  If you feel it's a great film, order it
permanent (3.50 x 3=$10.50).  Marge:)

Well here I am now getting ready to go, I have been doing my homework in
terms of all the advice I've been given. Much of the homework I had done
months ago as far as the IGI database to identify which films to order and
some I did when we went to Tlachichila in Sept 2004. All of this data is
what compelled me to go to SLC. There is so much that needs to be looked up
and verified that only a trip to SLC will do it.

I found that I would get very

Instructions in English please

Could someone please give 'step by step' instructions in English on
how to find phone numbers on the two web-sites that Jon Walker
posted. The English link still is not clear enough for those of us
that don't have the Spanish skills. I was surprised to hear that
someone actually found a phone number.

Thoughts on a SLC Trip

Alicia
I would spend your time at SLC in making copies of those records you
found on the IGI. If you ONLY go after the extracted documents that
you know are on the films, you should have no problem getting thru
the 47 rolls of film you have. Then any extra time can be used by
going thru a couple of films slowly. If your list of documents to
find is listed by film number, and then date, it goes rather fast
and you can take 2-3 rolls of film to the film printer room. As I
mentioned before, do your homework now in creating that list. Take
your clipboards to separate your surnames into your pedigree
branches.
Rich and I will be there the end of April thru the first week of
May. We also probably will be back the middle of August again. Our
grand daughter goes to Weber State in Ogden and yes we look like the
Beverly Hillbillies carrying her stuff back and forth.
I would not be surprised if 25% of your films are actually at the
library. When you call in your films to

I found that I would get very agressive and order many rolls of
film at my local FHS and by the time my 3 or 4 weeks were up I'd only
had a chance to review 2 or 3 rolls, hence the trip to SLC. I will be
there for 3 days and nights but somehow I don't believe that will be
enough. I see from some of your responses that some of you go several
times a year. That also tells me that 3 days will not be enough but I
also know that I don't have the financial resources to go often.

Inside Scoop on the Family History Library

Jonathan,

According to the IGI records, all 47 of the films I'm presently interested in are in the vault. Does that mean that not one living soul has ever looked at these films? Am I treading new waters?

There are several books I'd like to look up, If I find relevant information can some of the books be foto copied? or scanned?

Marge,

I think that's so cool, "the geneaology rate". My husband got a kick out of that one, he says where else can you get a discount for claiming your deceased relatives.

Hey,

Just left Salt Lake City yesterday, and whenever I'm in town I stay at the Howard Johnson Express, On N. Temple & 300 West.  It's $40 a night for a queen or king size bed, and about 5-10 walk to the Family History Library.

There are hotels a block or two closer, but if cost is an issue, I'd stay at Howard Johnsons.

And usually there is someone who can answer your questions. Also, for
with Mexico research, there is Sister Ruth Schirmacher who is an

Going to Salt Lake City

The LDS in Westwood is located on Santa Monica
Boulevard at the corner of Manning. Not to far east of
the 405 Freeway and north of the 10 Freeway. I was
told there that it was the second largest in the
country, after the one in Salt Lake City. It has many
films. The most are from the state of Jalisco. I found
several good ones for Tepa and Atotnilco (los Altos),
but I have been ordering some. I got to the point that
I rather take a trip to Salt Lake City before I spend
more to have some sent to L.A. Whoever goes to Salt
Lake City needs to give us the inside scoop for those
of us who want to go in the near future, but are not
certain how soon it will be.

Is this something you want me to do when I go to Salt Lake? Or are you referring to a different board such as the on-line message board? Yes I know I'm slow in the brain but it's best to ask rather than continue to question the content and intent.

Thank you Victor, Yes Last years book will be fine even the year
before. I suspect that the relatives I'm looking for might have been
living in my areas of specific research for 300 years so that being the
case I don't think they moved from house to house much either. . .so
even a book from 2001 or 2002 would be great and definitely much much
more than I have now which is nothing.

thanks Victor. . .and to any others that might look for books for me

appreciated. both white and yellow if possible. thanks much,

Jonathan,

It would be my pleasure to meet with you while in Salt Lake. My only fear is that I'm so ignorant compared to all you seasoned genealogists, but the upside is that I would learn so much.

I haven't booked my flight yet but I'm considering arriving on the 14th early in the AM and departing on March 16th late in the evening. That would give me 3 full days. I hope that's enough to do some serious damage.

Would any of those days work for you? Who knows maybe we can inspire, coerce or cajole some other Ranchos members into going on those dates. If these dates don't work maybe you can suggest alternate dates. I'm not available the last week in March but I could be talked into early April if need be,  before Joseph kicks me out for falling behind on my research.

Thanks again Jonathan and looking forward to meeting you and learning from one of the master  genealogists.

Their website (www.seccionamarilla.com.mx) allows you to lookup a

person, which I suspect is not exactly what you'd like doing anyway.
You see, these phone books are printed only for their subscribers,
and although I'm sure that they have to print some extra copies is
not very easy finding them. I'm still trying, though.

I've also posted some messages in one of the Zacatecas forums asking
for help from someone who lives there to help us get at least one
phone book. No answer yet. By the way, is it Ok if I get last
year's edition?
