Hacienda Pena Blanca

Ed,
Glad to know that you liked those two links that I posted.

About "my secret methods" to search on the internet, well that's what
they are: Secret.

Just kidding, Edward!!!

No big secret really. I regularly use Google because I get the best
results with it. The key lies in the search expressions that you use.

It is what I would call the "shovel approach" versus the "tweezers
approach". In other words, using a single search expression or a
couple of generic expressions will get you a scoop of information but
not necessarily what you're looking for.

What I try to do is to combine several selected words and/or phrases
in my search expressions, sometimes even using exclusion filters, to
narrow down the search results.

In these particular case the reason you didn't find the same sites
could've been that I used the letter "ñ" instead of the "n" in Peña.

And for other group members who are also interested in this and who
haven't yet read Google's search tips, you

Monte de Duranes

go to "link" go to "2000 Mexican Census" go to "Zacatecas" go to
"Nochistlan" go to "Monte de Duranes."

so this place was in existence as of 2000

I wonder if Alicia Carrillo and Lorenzo Cuesta might be related somewhere?

Alicia's SLC Trip

Well sounds like it was a very rewarding trip. . .thats what you needed
was a spark to get the familia interested and involved in helping you
mine for more of that gold. And yes I know about the happy dance. . .my
heart does little backflips and the whole room in my Family History
Center kind of gets the point that I just found someone special from my
reaction. I actually cried*** when I found my GGG grandmothers death
certificate just like if she had died right then, it was a very moving
experience.

***well maybe I teared up a bit.

Now you'll have to slowly and at a more leisurely pace order some of
these films to your local FHC. Even put some of the better ones on
permanent. Use the SLC library for searching all the films that you
just have a hunch about or for books or a multitude of other materials
(i'm sure) that aren't available at your local FHC.

thanks for the play by play. . .glad you survived the joyful ordeal. I
think when I get old (oops to late) I want to move to

Hacienda Pena Blanca

Victor,

Thank you for your two emails. They are very interesting. One more question. How did you
get this information. I "searched" all over the place and you seemed to find this without
much difficulty. Please tell me your secret methods. Do you search via Mexico site? Search
engine?

So how was your trip to SLC. .

Joseph and Ranchos members. My trip was very rewarding but very exhausting. I arrived on Sunday afternoon and was promptly informed that all dining establishments were closed on Sunday with the exception of the mall which was about 4 city blocks away.  I proceeded to walk to the mall so I could get to know the area, find the mall and find the family history library that evening. I found the library that evening then walked back to my hotel room to rest up for Monday morning.

Monday morning in order to maximize my time at the library I had the continental breakfast at the hotel then proceeded to the library. The first part of the morning I sat through a brief introductory video that told me most of what I already knew so I passed on the second video and proceeded downstairs to B1 which is the international floor. To those of you who know this process this is old news, but to those who have yet to go and are planning to

Ok, now I know I'm related to your husband. Unfortunately, I don't have any
of the names you've provided. However, I do have plenty of "De Alba", "Martin",
"Martines" in my lineage.

You may email me directly at:

Dear Emilie,

I also have roots in "La Chona". I don't have any of the names you
mentioned, but I do have other "Cervantes". These are:

Ana de \Cervantes\ Villasenor y de Alba who died 05 Jun 1629 in Santa Maria
de los Lagos, Encarnacion, Jalisco, Mexico.

and Ana's father, Francisco de \Cervantes\ Villasenor.

I'm sure that our ancestry lines will cross somewhere, as I've found that
just about every family from the Los Altos area is related.

Hacienda Pena Blanca

Ed,

My guess is that it does exist still but not under a single
ownership. I found references to it in this website:

it was in existence as of the year 2000. . .go to "links" go to "2000
Mexican Census" to to "Zacatecas" (wait awhile as it might take a minute
to download) then go to "Valparaiso" then go to "Pena Blanca."

Los Cristeros en Nochistlan

Natalie,

My mother says that my grandmother and her 2 children were exiled during the Cristero rebellion to the big city (big for them) of Nochistlan. The Cristeros were burning, pillaging and assaulting the neighboring rancherias. My mother and father were both born in 1925 and neither one of them had birth records because the records for that year were burned by the Cristeros. Last September when we went to Nochistlan, that was confirmed by both the Church and the municipio, neither one had records for that year and they both said it was due to the Cristero rebellion.

Through the years I've heard stories from aunts and uncles who are now deceased about this. My grandmother as well as many other women and children were said to have been in seclusion while the men stayed behind to protect their property.

La Cristada

Natalie,

I think what you're refering to is the "Cristiada" or "Guerra de los
Cristeros", a violent conflict between the Mexican government and the
Catholic church in the 1920's.

You can do a search of those two words and you'll find a lot of
information on that little know episode of the Mexican history.

The following link provides a summary from the Catholic perspective:

La Cristada

Can anyone provide information on something known as "La Cristada"? I
was viewing some photos historical photos at www.valparaiso.tk having
to do with "La Cristada en Valparaiso, Zacatecas y Huejuquilla,
Jalisco" - pretty gruesome photos (hangings and beheadings), but do
not know the background of this event, when it took place, etc. Can
anyone provide information? I tried google, but didn't find much that
was helpful (judging by synopsi (sp?)- however,I did not open any of
the listings). Many of you are well informed, so I trust someone can
help learn something new. Thanks.

Marriage Dispensas: Was-Ramirez /Serendipitous research

Natalie wrote:

I was at the local FHC yesterday to view film #1164746/Valparaiso
Church Records- Informacion matrimonial, 1904-1907. I was perusing
the film - wanted to see who was from Astillero, besides my
grandfather and grandmother, when I came across a record that just
made me wonder (these are the basics, not finite details because I
didn't write them down): The bride and groom were both surnamed
Ramirez; the groom was 24 years old; the bride was a 40-something
widow; the bride was the sister of the groom's father. Has anyone
else come across a similar record/situation?

what great good luck. keeping it all in the family produces what are
called "Marriage Dispensas" Seems that when couples were related they
needed special permission to marry and this often involved lots of
investigation and genealogy lines being produced. I'm not the expert on
this subject and there are a few messages in the archives about
Dispensas. . .I'm not sure that was the subject name. .

An Olague from Jerez, Zacatecas.

Marge, I believe you are searching for relatives with
the last name of Olague. Today in the obituary column
of the Santa Barbara News-Press newspaper, I found the
following:

"On March 8, 2005, our beloved grandfather, Felipe
Olague Menchaca peacefully passed away due to a long
term illness, with his closest family members at his
side. Felipe was born on May 26, 1919 in Jerez,
Zacatecas, Mx, to Alejo Menchaca and Aniceta Olague.
He migrated to the United States in the 1940's and
settled in Santa Barbara, CA where he contributed to
the establishment of our railroad for several years.
Two of Felipe's greatest accomplishment were marrying
the beautiful love of his life, Pauline Menchaca and
becoming an American citizen."

There was other information and you want me to send
it to you, please let me know. Both names, Olague and
Menchaca, are names that go back to the beginning of
Jerez when it was first settled.

My grandfather, Alberto Duarte Vasquez, who was from
Jerez, probably
